Hello PCLAR members & friends,
A series of three workshops will be offered for homeowners this summer in Balsam Lake. These Lake Friendly Landscaping Workshops will prepare waterfront property owners to create a rain garden or native flower planting.*
June 26: Rain Gardens
How to create a garden of beautiful flowers that can correct erosion and runoff to the lake. Do it yourself or with the help of experienced local landscapers.
July 10: Native Plants
The beauty of native plants and their benefit to lakeshore landscapes. Live plants, reference materials, sources to buy your plants, tips for getting started.
August 7: Design and Tour
Garden design fundamentals. Talk with lakeshore property owners and landscapers who have completed lakeshore landscaping with native plants, then break into small groups for a tour around Balsam Lake to see the beautiful gardens.
Fee: $10 each workshop. Free to Balsam Lake District residents.
*Rain gardens capture runoff water, and the pollutants it carries, from pavement, rooftops, and streets. Native plantings also intercept runoff water while attracting desirable wildlife like frogs, birds, and butterflies, and at the same time deter geese.
The Balsam Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District, Polk County, University of Wisconsin Extension, and the Department of Natural Resources are sponsoring the training.
Presenters include Cheryl Clemens, Harmony Environmental, John Haack, DNR Basin Educator.
